Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We have the privilege of working with our amazing students curious, creative young learners who thrive in hands-on, engaging environments. Many of these students benefit from extra support and enrichment outside of the regular school day, and our cooking class has become one of their favorite parts of the program. It’s more than just making food it’s about learning life skills, practicing teamwork, and building confidence.

This experience is especially meaningful for our second language learners, who gain valuable opportunities to develop English vocabulary and communication skills in a natural, supportive setting.

Cooking allows them to follow step-by-step instructions, collaborate with peers, and express themselves all while building language fluency through meaningful, real-life tasks.

With a stove and refrigerator in our classroom, our cooking club can expand what we’re able to teach and do. We’ll be able to safely store ingredients, follow recipes from beginning to end, and introduce students to basic kitchen safety, measuring, budgeting, and nutrition. These resources will allow students to take ownership of their learning and gain practical, real-world skills that will serve them well into the future.

Students truly benefit from participating in cooking class, as it allows them to apply and expand their knowledge across multiple subjects.

In math, they practice real-world skills such as cost estimation, measurement, and multiplication. Through STEM, they explore concepts like recipe design, states of matter, and physical changes.

Thank you for supporting our students as they grow into confident, capable learners both in and out of the kitchen!
