This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have very big hearts and truly make do with what they have. For some, school is their safe haven from extremely poverty-stricken and violent homes. My students are in a very low-income community. They are kind and loving but may not get all the things they need. I have really gotten to know these students in our building and their families very well. I have already learned that I have children who come from needy families. Some of my children come from split families where they may or may not see one or both parents. I am very lucky to be able to touch these kiddos' lives. They are very creative and love to be able to explore their learning world through my classroom.
Each child in the class has his or her own unique personality that has really brought our community together.
They are very creative and are starting to really enjoy the academic world and are improving every day.
My Project
This project is to support social-emotional learning within the classroom. Students have been learning with the second step and positive action programs for social-emotional learning. In these programs they both support a child being able to be in control of their emotions and if they aren't to be able to take a break so that they can calm down. A lot of the time students who need to calm down are being stared at by other children which can trigger behaviors more. The request for the tent is so that they have some privacy when they are trying to calm down but also can be monitored to make sure that they are doing the right steps. I also am requesting the cushions, lap desk, and some books that will help students while in this calm down corner.
Now more than ever practicing how to regulate our emotion is crucial with the amount of trama that created by the Covid-19 pandemic.
I want my students to know that I have a caring and nurturing classroom. I want to set up space so that they know they are welcomed and not be afraid of their feelings. It is ok to feel sad and mad but controlling our actions is important when we are feeling those types of feelings.
