This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students crave learning and positive attention. They want to be successful but some lack the interpersonal skills necessary to achieve both academic and social success. They want so much to do well, but sometimes struggle in how to do just that.
My amazing students are often faced with stressful situations at home including hunger, violence, or lack of parental supervision which can create anger and anxiety at school.
Research tells us that students most basic needs must be met first before we can expect learning to occur.
Our students come from a mostly low income area and many need the school's help in providing food on the weekends. Its hard to imagine how their home lives must be, and yet they come to school every day eager for someone to love and teach them. Some of my most challenging students are the ones who are not able to use words to express their feelings or calm themselves down. These are the students I desperately want to reach.
My Project
We have initiaed a calming lab in the counselors office this year for students who need help regulating their emotions. The lab is coming along nicely with a wonderful computer program, comfy rug, toys for sand tray therapy, and books. This has all been made possible by our school PTA and previous donors choose projects.
The materials I am requesting now will help finish off the space and make the calming lab everything I dreamed it would be.
Currently the students have hard chairs to sit in when they are learning how to breath correctly or when they are relaxing in the sand tray area. They need soft and comfy chairs to relax on. The kinetic sand will also help dramatically because it adds a whole new sensory experience many have never had. The skills they will learn with me with most certainly translate to help with future stressors at school, at home, and in life.
