Cool, Calm, and Cared For: Meeting Our Students’ Everyday Needs

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our 12:1:1 special education classroom, my students are a vibrant group of unique individuals with diverse strengths, challenges, and sensory needs. Every day, they show incredible determination and joy as they learn, play, and support one another. Their curiosity, creativity, and resilience make our classroom a special place to be.
As the warmer months approach, maintaining a cool, comfortable classroom becomes essential for my students’ well-being and ability to focus.
Many of my students have sensory processing challenges that make them especially sensitive to heat and changes in temperature. When the classroom becomes too warm or stuffy, it can lead to discomfort, dysregulation, and difficulty concentrating.
Fans: I am requesting two fans to improve air circulation and keep the classroom environment cool and soothing. This will help prevent sensory overload and reduce irritability, allowing students to stay calm, focused, and ready to learn. A comfortable temperature supports sustained attention and promotes a positive, engaging learning atmosphere.
Mini Fridge: I’m also requesting a mini fridge so that students can have easy access to cold drinks and refreshing snacks throughout the day. Hydration is critical during hot weather, especially for children with sensory or medical needs. This resource will ensure that students stay energized and regulated while reinforcing structure and routine—two things that help my students thrive.
These simple resources will go a long way in helping my students feel physically comfortable and emotionally secure during warmer days. By meeting their basic needs, we can create a calm, nurturing space where they are free to grow, explore, and reach their full potential.
