This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our class has inherited a passion for S.T.E.A.M. through the evolution of our discovery zone. The students are very curious and imaginative. This group of preschoolers is thrilled to experiment with new ideas and concepts, as well as explore any and everything they can get their hands on. It is a constant challenge for me to provide them with experiences that will quench their discovery needs.
Everyday is an adventure with this group of fun-loving and inquisitive group of preschoolers.
We are a class of 20 diverse students. Our pre-k program is funded by an LA4 grant that serves families who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Approximately one-third of my class population are English Language Learners (Hispanic and Arabic). This creates a daily challenge because many of these students are experiencing school and English for the very first time. Furthermore, their parents often do not speak English as well. This creates a bigger need for lots of hands-on experiences. We do an excellent job of making those things a forefront to our approach to learning.
My Project
The overall concept of my project is learning major skills through cooking. This project is an extension of a previous project that has been successful for the last two and a half years. We currently have the mini oven/range, but need the cooking accessories to achieve our addition to the previous project goal. These accessories will allow students to exercise skills including measurement, physical and chemical changes, time management, healthy habits and nutrition, and food handling safety.
In my classroom, we embrace hands-on learning because it is captivating and more lifelike for the children.
The concept of teaching major skills through cooking engages the children in S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) on a less traditional platform. Children get a greater understanding through real experiences that they can build on as they gain more knowledge. The quality of the materials requested purchased will enable us to build and continue this project for years to come.
