Help me give my students a multicooker toaster oven which can give our students options for Vocational Skills, Social Skills, and Senior Project Classes.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 34 self-contained high school students. We reside in a Title I school, which means there is very little funding, yet we have such a high need for supplies!
My students are all amazing, unique, loving and energetic humans!
They are vibrant and brave, active and creative. My students have a variety of diagnoses including, but not limited to: Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, ED, Down Syndrome, LD, and multiple disabilities. I have verbal students as well as nonverbal students. All of my students have difficulty with communication skills, social skills, and struggle to process sensory information.
Our class is bare and supplies are minimal. My students deserve the best, and at the very least deserve the items deemed necessary to help them self-regulate, de-stress and provide imperative sensory stimulation.
My Project
Cooking classes develop fine motor skills with the help of activities such as chopping, cutting, kneading, mixing, pouring, rolling, whisking, etc. My students will also get hands-on experience with tools and utensils that will be useful throughout their lives. I teach vocational skills class, social skills class, life skills class and work with seniors on their senior projects (which can be cooking a dish). Our students are in a self-contained special education classroom and love creating and cooking and eating! I bring in an older slow cooker which is on its last legs. We are asking for help in getting a Breville Smart toaster oven to give our kiddos all the opportunity they wouldn't get otherwise. Our school does not have the funds to support our class activities, so your help donating to this project is appreciated!
There are so many lessons that are intertwined with cooking... reading, math, and writing, life skills, vocational skills and social skills.
At the end of the year, each student will go home with a cookbook full of recipes to share with their family!
We will be working on cooking healthy items, seasonal items, bringing in new fruits and vegetables for my students to try, and tracking their progress with pictures along the way. Being healthy is important and needs to be learned. So far we have learned to make applesauce in the slow cooker and the kids loved it. They were even happier eating it!
More than half of students from low‑income households
