Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you ever wish you had the option to learn living skills such as cooking while you were in school? My students are fortunate enough to be able to come to my after school class to learn how to do just that.
In my cooking class, we do a little bit of everything—since our school is full of different cultures we learn how to make all types of foods.
Coming from an impoverished urban area of Texas, sometimes the meals the kids get at school are the only meals the kids get. My class offers the kids not only an opportunity to try new foods but the opportunity to learn how to cook them as well.
My Project
I have an after school class where we teach the students how to cook. We do a variety of foods since we have a mix of cultures in our school. These range from cajun cuisine, traditional Mexican foods such as carne asada, and Asian foods like chicken fried rice. The students truly love doing this, since it is an elective after school class, and they want to be there. The ingredients in our fundraiser will help the students learn how to cook many things from just a few ingredients. By having these ingredients, I can show the kids that you don’t need expensive ingredients to make expensive tasting food.
Cooking and eating together makes memories.
By creating positive memories and building essential life skills with my kids, I hope to leave a lasting impression on them. My students not only begin to form bonds with me, but with each other, and ignite a passion for culinary arts.
