Cooking Up Some Life Skills

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn how to cook things from scratch using nonstick pots and pans for quick and easy clean up!

My Project

At Wheeler Middle School, majority of the students come from military families. When COVID-19 hit, we were stuck in the house, not able to socialize and unsure of when we would return to "normalcy" and some of my students had a parent overseas not knowing when they would be allowed to return home. Now that we have returned to in person learning, I have noticed that a lot of the students struggle with their social emotional development and group work because they prefer doing things on their own since they've been used to doing things independently for a couple of years when they were doing distance learning. In my Family & Consumer Science classes (aka Home Economics), it is a joy to see these students relearning how to communicate effectively while they work with group members to cook and bake recipes from scratch. The additional bonus is knowing that my students will be using the life skills that they learned this class for the rest of their lives. When the students are in the kitchens, they are applying what they've learned in their math, english and science classes through measuring, reading the recipe and understanding the science behind some of the interactions of ingredients while also learning about kitchen tools/equipment and how to properly use them to help them produce their mouth watering creations. The students will use the mixing bowls, stainless steel dishers (cookie scoopers), cookie sheets, can opener, non stick frying pans and pot will be used to make cookies, pizza, soups, omelettes and pancakes from scratch. By donating to this project, you will not only provide the tools and equipment needed to allow these students to learn new life skills, you will help teach the students the importance of working together efficiently and effectively.
