Help me give my students with autism the ability to learn valuable cooking life skills using everyday items such as a toaster oven, blender, baking pans, bowls, and utensils.
My students have severe autism along with other ID components and struggle with everyday routines, social-emotional learning, and tasks that most of us take for granted. They are all unique and have special skills. Since we are a Title I school, most of my students come from low-income households and often need extra help and support.
My students all have something that is special and unique.
I have one student who can put a puzzle together without looking at the picture. Another student can identify all the Disney and Pixar logos. Many of my students love to build things and come up with different ways to use common items that you would never think of!
My Project
Every week we make a recipe that uses various kitchen items such as a waffle maker or a toaster oven. The toaster oven can be used to make pizza, grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken nuggets - ALL items that are favorites for students with autism. We also teach them cooking vocabulary such as mixing, pouring, chopping, slicing, measuring, etc. using our utensils and bowls, measuring cups and spoons.
Students get very excited when they get to measure and pour ingredients into a bowl!
Getting familiar with kitchen items also expands their palate as students with autism often eat the same type of foods. Doing a different recipe every week gives them exposure to all types of foods and textures. We encourage them to smell, touch, and taste the food. This can often be a challenge for our students.
Most of our students are non-verbal with severe autism and require visual recipes. These resources will enable them to learn how to cook from beginning to end - identifying the ingredients and tools, making the recipe, and eating it!
