Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"If you really want to make a friend, go to someones house and eat with him... the people who give you their food give you their heart." -Cesar Chavez. My students with autism are working on social, language, and life skills, and cooking and eating together are great ways to do it.

Many of my students are in 6th-12th grade in a special district program for students with autism spectrum disorders.

They are bright, good-hearted kids, and they have greater difficulty with language, social, and life skills than other students their age. As their speech-language pathologist, I get to provide them with extra support with these language, social, and life skills. These students work best with low teacher-to-student ratios, extra visual supports for learning, and hands-on activities. They love the opportunities they get to participate in electives and activities in general education outside of the program, such as PE, lunch, and art. Some of these students choose extremely limited, often unhealthy diets and require a lot of support with eating.

My Project

My students will use the cooking supplies requested to create healthy recipes they may recreate at home while targeting life, social, and language skills. We requested several safe cooking tools, a blender/processor for smoothies and safe produce prep, a microwave and toaster oven for quick meals, special cookbooks with picture instructions, a hot plate and pan with which they can learn to safely make simple meals like steamed veggies and rice or spaghetti. Through learning to safely prepare their own nutritious food, these students will gain independence as they move toward graduation. Many will try new, healthy options. I also want to bring the social eating and cooking environment to class to create natural, engaging ways to target areas to help these students with autism participate in our social society--conversation, friendship, teamwork, being part of a group, turn taking, following directions, describing, answering questions, attention, vocabulary, health, and sensory needs.

With these cooking appliances, tools, and books, my students will learn to make snacks and meals that are both tasty and functional to increase independence; they'll have a memorable, engaging way to work on the important social, life, and language skills with which many students with autism need support; and they'll make friends.

They loved making the recipes we were able to create so far with kitchen equipment brought from home (fruit salad, "ants on a log"), and we can't wait to make morel
