My Students

As a special education teacher in an alternative school, I see students daily who are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my students are eager to learn both academics and life skills in order to create for themselves a better life.

My students love to be engaged and enjoy working with tools that teach "real world" skills.

Because of their low socioeconomic status and the fact that many are being raised in single parent households, many of my students are not provided with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. Although I cannot control their home lives and their lives outside of school, I can certainly control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire them to become productive members of society.

My Project

At the alternative school we are lucky to have the opportunity to use a kitchen that was once used as a home economics room. My students have a strong desire to learn to cook. They are learning about menu planning, grocery shopping, financial planning/money management, nutrition, kitchen safety and health codes as they work on cooking and baking simple healthy snacks and meals. We currently run a small "cafe" for the teachers of the school. During this time, the students fix the lunches and staff members purchase them. This allows students to work on basic life skills such as cooking and following directions but also allows them to work on communication, teamwork, money skills, and interpersonal skills. The materials we are requesting are basic kitchen staples such as bowls, utensils, pans, etc. Students will use these materials often, learning how to cook and properly care for kitchen equipment.

Many items are missing and have not seen the proper care over the years.

I want to give my students the ability to properly care for, and fix, lunches not only for themselves but for others. By giving them proper equipment and teaching them the value of taking care of it over time, I am able to instill in them a sense of accomplishment and pride. All of my students have dreams to live as independently as possible and are excited about gaining the skills to learn to cook for themselves and others.
