Throughout this past year, we have been running our Food Science course in a regular classroom that is not equipped to operate as a kitchen. Meaning we have to work through issues like lack of equipment, tools, and proper materials. Though my students have absolutely adored the class, they are disappointed at the lack of projects they can tackle due to not having these proper resources. One of the main resources we are in dire need of and do not have funds for is ovens. We have the hook-ups and the space for them, we just need the ovens themselves.
Ovens are critical components of a functional kitchen, so not having one is crippling our course.
One unit we have wanted to attempt in class includes canning. Many of my students come from cultures where canning is incredibly important to them and their survival. They grow their own food, like herbs and vegetables, then can the foods and dishes they make. This creates a sense of family and support with their relatives, and I would love to recreate this same feeling within my course. It also gives many of my students who struggle during the winter for food the chance to learn how to save foods and be able to feed themselves and their families throughout the whole year. Sadly, we cannot even begin to attempt this unit and many others because the only appliances we have in class are toaster ovens and air fryers, which do not fully support the type of projects my students want to partake in.
Overall, the oven would completely change our course to be something my students can try new recipes in and attempt countless different types of dishes, whether that be canning, baking, or regular cooking that requires a stove top. Thank you!
