This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school, and most of my students come from low income homes. I am their Family and Consumer Science teacher. Many of my students have a hunger to learn how to cook and learn life skills that they will hold onto for life. Many of my students are very wonderful and curious children who want to see the world through food and create things with their own two hands.
As their teacher, I want to foster this hunger through engaging, interactive, and hands-on lessons.
I believe that half of learning comes from a book and the other half by applying that knowledge to a hands on activity. I want to share my knowledge and passion of my subject that lights a spark of inspiration in my students.
My Project
The books in this project will help expand our classroom library. Students will be able to use them to do research on cooking methods, baking skills, and cuisine types. I hope to use these books to help inspire kitchen labs and exploration of styles of food. Every book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and we are thankful for the opportunities to expand my students pallets. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind.
I have a great diversity of students in my class and I want our culinary library to be the same.
I chose books written by people of color. I chose books by people that love and share the amazing cuisine of Louisiana. I also chose books that could be used as reference material to accompany our class textbooks.
More than half of students from low‑income households
