My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of our students are immigrants, speaking little to no English, arriving here from different parts of the world. They are eager to learn and be successful in school. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have access to healthy, home cooked food on a daily basis. They are exposed to unhealthy foods, and consume a great deal of fast food and unhealthy snacks every day. We have students who are bordering on obese, and some who are at risk for diabetes and high blood pressure due to these poor eating habits.
I have been working with groups of these students and teaching them how to cook healthy meals for both themselves and their families in the cooking club that I created.
My Project
I am requesting items that I need to make my Cooking Club program a great success! I need a refrigerator with a freezer that I can keep in the classroom and store the healthy foods, meats and vegetables that my students will be learning to prepare healthy meals with. In addition, I am in desperate need of a good set of cooking pots that will enable my students to prepare the meals in my classroom. Finally, I am in need of a good digital camera so that we can record the amazing work that the students are doing in the kitchen, and share it with the rest of our school community and our district.
The donations for this project will allow my students who normally eat fast food and junk food for most of their meals, to learn how to cook and eat healthy food for themselves and their families!
I truly worry that poor eating habits will lead to health issues like heart disease, diabetes and obesity, and I need your help to inspire my students to make healthy food choices. Thank you!
