Chile, Japan, Egypt, Turkey...these are just a few of the 30+ countries my students have called home. Our school is diverse in many ways, and is an exciting place to teach and learn.
My students are innovative and are ready to connect academics with real life skills they'll use everyday.
My school is located in an exciting, central part of Chicago. Our students work hard to meet high expectations and are constantly surprising and impressing me with their kindness, enthusiasm, and curiosity about the world around them.
I teach four science classes per day, each having over 30 students. My students participate daily in exploration, questioning, and engineering of scientific concepts about the natural world. They're the scientists of tomorrow, I'm sure of it.
My Project
My students have an amazing opportunity this year for the first time to choose a different elective course each quarter.
I am offering a healthy cooking class that coincides with essential life skills and food science.
My school has never offered any sort of cooking class and does not have a kitchen kids can use, so we'll have to start from scratch (pun intended).
120 students across 5th and 6th grade will be able to taste test a variety of fruits and vegetables and then create a dish using those ingredients. We'll investigage the cultures represented in our school through food. They'll focus on nutrition and learn how to read food labels. They'll observe the chemical reactions that happen when baking foods using leavening agents. They'll plan and execute a three-course meal. They'll share meals and make new friends. These are all essential life skills that will follow them throughout their lives while building confidence and independence.
We need basic cooking, serving, and food storage supplies for several small groups of students in order to make this happen for these children.
