My students need 2 measuring spoon and cups sets, a mixing bowl set, 5 bake ware items, an island set and a food processor to use when we cook, juice and bake all of our fruits and vegetables into new and exciting recipes.
Cook what we grow! My students need to learn to make healthier choices in their eating. By cooking and baking the fruits and vegetables we have grown in our garden, they will learn that many things they wouldn't try before are actually taste good.
I have 24 third graders that include GATE, Special Education and Regular Ed students.
Our school has a 76% free and reduced meals student population. Many of my students spend 8-10 hours each day at school due to childcare issues.
We are a small public school in a large urban school district in California. With all of the cutbacks in our state, all of our budgets for extension activities have been cut to almost nothing. Without assistance from grants, my students will not be able to experience educational and fun activities like these.
My Project
Most of my students think that pizza, hamburgers and chicken nuggets are the ultimate in food choices.
These cooking tools, kitchen island and mini food processor will be used by my students as they create different recipes using the fruits and vegetables from our garden.
Jamie Oliver says, "Our ambition is to replace processed and junk food with freshly cooked meals in schools all over America meals made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, cooked from scratch by properly trained cooks in well-equipped kitchens." My goal is to help my students use the fruits and vegetables from our classroom garden to cook nutritious food for all of us to enjoy, which I believe is one of the goals that FEED USA has as well!
