Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Kindergarten teacher at a low-income, high-need school. At lunch time the children often do not get time for recess. They are expected to stay seated and quiet at the lunch table for 50 minutes day after day. This is very challenging for 5 year olds and often causes issues in the lunchroom.

My students are all from low-income families.

Many are from single parent homes. They have few opportunities to participate in any extra curricular activities. Even at lunchtime they are rarely given recess time. They rarely get to go outside and play, something most people think is a given in elementary school. The students often end up getting in trouble in the lunch room because they have too much energy to sit quietly at a table for 50 minutes.

My Project

This year I will be holding lunchtime cooking club for the students. Twice a week some students will spend their lunchtime with me preparing healthy child-friendly recipes. It would be fantastic if you could help us get some basics to start our cooking club. We do not have access to an oven so a toaster oven would allow the children to watch their recipes be cooked right before their eyes. Basic cooking supplies such as a pan, pot, measuring cups, and bowls will also make cooking club more fun and enriching for the children. These supplies will enable us to try out a wider range of recipes.

Your support will be help students in a high-need school in a variety of ways.

They will have the opportunity to participate in something fun and engaging during the school day. They will have the opportunity to spend time outside of the challenging lunchroom forming a bond with an adult. The children will also learn nutritious recipes and healthy eating habits.
