My Project

This trimester we are starting a new culinary program called Unified Family & Consumer science, where we partner up general education students with several of our special needs students. This class is designed to build confidence, excitement for learning, teaching skills to lead to independent living in the future, teamwork and compassion.

We currently just have one microwave, and with a large class, it slows down lessons and the flow of learning.

We are looking to add a few more so that every group can have their own microwave which would complete their cooking station. We have many exciting recipes and skills lined up, including mug cakes, beverages and savory foods that all require either a melting or warming component. The microwave is going to be a critical role in many of my students’ futures because of the ease, convenience and flexibility it offers to those with limited mobility and dexterity.

This class is so important to my students lives. In the short time we have run the class this trimester so far, it has become a highlight of every student’s day, excited for learning and working with their partners. To see the big smiles and laughter on students who are typically overlooked because of their outward appearance and/or ability, is so heart warming knowing they are making connections for life and skills to help them beyond the school day.
