Cooking Corner, Take 2

My students need a new microwave oven, a breadmaker, a sandwich press, and a chocolate fountain.

My Students

A typical Friday Cooking Corner day starts off with a review of our weekly recipe and its ingredients. The students look forward to trying new recipes but our old appliances are beginning to break and wear out. With new appliances the students will be able to create masterpieces.

My students attend an inner-city, public high school.

The students are all high school leveled (9-12) with moderate to severe to life skills/learning disabilities. The Life Skills Program offers time during the school day where we can create recipes taken from our curriculum materials. The students openly share their newest creations with other school students as well as staff members.

My Project

In preparation for their real-life experiences at home (post-high school,) I am attempting to teach them how to create 2-3 step recipes they can replicate at home. The students willingly try these new recipes weekly, often giving their input for the taste, appearance, smell, etc of each new recipe item. Our students are capable of using basic small kitchen appliances with assistance or close supervision. These new appliances will give the students more exposure to creating different types of meals, once they've completed their high school requirements.

Hopefully these new small appliances will allow my students to be able to create tasteful recipes for use in school and at home.

By using new appliances, the students will be able to help with meals at home, resulting in greater independence for them.
