This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
These students are compassionate, hard working and inquisitive. They are willing to learn but have been presented a bad hand in life. Some of them have become the parents by default because of a lack of parenting for themselves. So they have to do for themselves and in most cases, for brothers and sisters. I have witnessed house fires and sometimes injuries because of their willing spirit to cook for the family. These students are low income and in a poverty increased area with high crime and they still manage to work hard in school and get there despite very challenging circumstances.
My Project
I plan to teach my students personal safety as well as food safety. As a Chef, I plan to start simple by giving them techniques to ensure safety and ultimately provide them with a life skills, not only to help the family but also give them a job in life and or a option in a career path. I will teach them the proper way to handle hot cooking and preparation and simple cold preparation. I will also teach healthy and nutritious ways of preparing meals and snacks for themselves as well as how to budget and shop for the family. They will also learn sanitation and proper cleaning of materials, meats and produce.
