Cooking Club for Philadelphia Public School Students

Help me give my students access to cooking classes and healthy cooking practices through an after school cooking class. We will be trying to explore various cuisines and cooking techniques that promote incorporating vegetables and other healthy practices.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school in Philadelphia. We are a 9-12 public school. My students come from all neighborhoods of Philadelphia and come from various economic backgrounds. I believe that multi-modal education is the best way to meet the needs of ​most students. By encouraging learning through multiple means I hope to enhance student health both mentally and physically.

My Project

These supplies will help to start a cooking club at our high school. Students will explore various cuisines and cooking techniques that promote healthy eating habits. Many Philadelphia neighborhoods are food deserts and students do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. This club will combine with a gardening club at school that encourages vegetable growth not only at school but also at home.

Students will also create recipes to bring home as well as share with the school community to encourage more participation.

Students have requested this club for years and we are finally trying to implement this program for students. Students in the Contemporary Issues class will also begin to explore food security and health as it relates to food in Urban Areas.
