We are a high school, special ed class in an awesome 109-year-old high school that services those with low-income and Title I needs. Our class consists of students with a wide range of abilities from autism to speech language impairments and cognitively delays.
Every day is a new adventure when we enter our doors.
We have quite an assortment of interests and skills and we like to see how many different ways we can incorporate them into our daily lives.
My Project
We are extremely grateful to have the teeny kitchen that we have. What we are struggling with is not having the correct tools for the job when we want to cook. It's difficult to teach students with autism how and when to use [enter utensil/tool] to cook healthy meals if the proper tool isn't available.
According to Thomas Carlyle, "Man is a tool-using animal - Without tools, he is nothing, with tools he is all." While some of my students are quite resourceful in finding alternative uses for something, most need visual recipes explicitly written out in order to be successful.
Our requested materials for cooking ware, baking ware, and utensils will allow me to make visual recipes from my students' choices without them having getting frustrated trying to improvise.
