Cooking Basics - Better Than Fast Food!

Help me give my students a chance to learn the basics of cooking, using low-cost appliances and eating healthy yet within a slim budget.

My Students

I am a Special Education teacher of 10th to 12th graders. Last year, I started a Transition class just for seniors. We work on skills that will assist them in life after high school.

The BIG thing that is happening this year is adding cooking to this class!

The students are very excited about this part of the class. They are spending time reading through recipe books, looking for things they can cook. Imagine that ... wanting to read! We just need supplies to help make this a greatly successful part of the class.

This Transition class is designed to have students be able to learn the basics of living on their own, including budgeting their income versus expenses, bank accounts – checking and saving, transportation costs, insurance, food costs, housing costs, clothing costs, entertainment costs, and the many unforeseen costs of living in the real world.

My Project

Without basic cooking skills, it is difficult for many people to eat healthy. My Transition class is designed to teach students how to create budgets based on their income and expenses. I have asked for appliances that are not overly costly, except for the Six in One cooker, but the students might find that having something like this will help save on other appliances. I also asked for a lap top, thinking most students either have a computer or cell phone and this is a great resource for looking up recipes that they will enjoy cooking.

My students live in the poorest city in all of California.

This doesn't leave much chance for many of the younger generation to secure a job that will put them above the poverty level. Yet, with cooking skills, my hope is that they will be able to serve good tasting, yet inexpensive meals to themselves and family that cost much less than stopping at the nearest fast food joint down the street.
