My Students

Every day my students come in and we eat breakfast together in our classroom. We then hop right into the daily routine for math and science. We love working at math stations such as computers, word problems, and the favorite game station.

My fifth grade students are young men and young ladies who live in the "most dangerous" city in the US as well as being labels one of the "poorest".

They struggle daily in many ways to make it to school but once they arrive they are ready to go. They come to school to learn. They have plans for college and to reach those goals we push everyday to overcome the struggles they face.

My Project

This project is a little unique in the way of the typical school supplies. My students see math as a must subject to pass the grade and move on but, I want to show them math is in almost everything they do daily. I want them to see math as an integral part of their daily lives because then they will become even more vested in their learning. I am requesting these kitchen items so my students can cook and make those connections to math. A way to my students' mind can definitely be through their stomachers. The connections we can make with measurements, fractions, multiplying are just a few topics I plan to teach through cooking. I also plan to use the supplies as an integral part of our science.

These project will improve my classroom in helping them realize math is around them everyday in everyday.

They will become more vested in their learning when they are applying what they have learned instead of just doing a worksheet. The students will be able to actually apply the skills taught to real life and that is a great learning experience.
