This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project will give my students practical life skills and make chemistry stoichiometry fun! I would like my students to experience a real-world application of chemistry by teaching them how to bake in ovens. It will give them an enjoyable experience in learning stoichiometry. Many of my student come from migrant families whose parents are very hard-working, so much so that many work longs hours and/or night shifts. As such, many of our students come home to an empty home. When I have taught a few students in the past to bake cookies with my limited resources, it has often been their first-time baking cookies, and some even their first time washing the resulting dishware.
Often times, students will ask why we are learning a particular topic, and rather than have them read examples, I want them to live the examples.
Teaching stoichiometry through a baking lens is an engaging way to teach students limiting reactants and percent yields. It provides a practical application to their learning and gets them excited about science. Stoichiometry and baking are two of my passions that I love sharing with students. I would love to be able to share the latter with ALL students. Baking provides an opportunity at hands-on learning.
Our students live in the low socio- economic community of Lennox in which crime, drugs, and prostitution is common. Teaching all of my students chemistry through baking would be the highlight of the year, and allow me to reach especially my struggling learners, English Learners, and students with learning disabilities, some of whom can become disengaged from formal learning techniques.
