My Project
In my high school English language arts classroom, students are asked to think deeply, read critically, and express themselves powerfully. But before they can do any of that, they need something basic: to feel safe, supported, and nourished. That’s why I’m reaching out to ask for your help in providing Grandma’s Cookies as classroom snacks.
Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
Some arrive at school without having eaten breakfast, and for others, lunch might be the last meal they have until the next school day. Hunger makes it difficult to focus, and it affects mood, confidence, and participation. A small, familiar treat like a pack of Grandma’s Cookies can make a world of difference.
These snacks offer more than just a quick source of energy. They bring comfort, consistency, and a sense of normalcy. When students know that there’s something waiting for them, a sweet treat after a tough day or a reward for completing an assignment, they feel valued. It’s a small gesture that reinforces the bigger message: you matter here.
Snacks like these also support classroom culture. They encourage students to take breaks when needed, to stay in class rather than wander the halls, and to engage with the material when they might otherwise shut down.
