PocketTalk is an amazing device that I have just discovered! It is an amazing device that contains the ability to take input and/or give output of 82 different languages. You can speak into it and will translate what you speak. Then the other person can speak their language into it and it will translate it back into English. All of this into a device smaller than an iPhone!
Why am I so excited about this?
Well, our school normally has more than 20 different home languages spoken by our amazing families. However, in the last half of a year we have been blessed with an entire new population of people. A local church's outside grounds has become a resting place for asylum seekers from all over the world. More specifically we are seeing children and families from Angola and South America. So, we are receiving children that speak Portuguese, Spanish and French among other languages. While these may be fairly mainstream languages in the World at large, they are not typical languages that we see (Somali, Vietnamese, Burmese, Nepali, Dari, Farsi and others). These amazing students and families come to us without any English. This device would help myself as a social worker when welcoming new families and getting them settled into their new school and would also help teaching staff immensely.
