Continuing to Cook Up Creativity in the Classroom

My Students

The students I work with are part of a unique program which permits them to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously (after grade eleven), with an opportunity to graduate with a diploma and an associate's degree. Our program is affiliated with a large, local public school district; because of this, our students come from diverse backgrounds. Because they were admitted to our school, they are bright, inquisitive, and highly motivated to succeed.

Since many students' parents work, they are likely to remain at school after lessons end for the day.

Extra curricular activities are thus very popular, with many students participating in sports, academic clubs, and common interest pursuits like the Cooking Club.

My Project

The first several weeks of Cooking Club have been fantastic, thanks to the generous donations of people from around the state (and country) via DonorsChoose. Student membership in Cooking Club has exploded, making it a popular (and educational) new extracurricular club at our school. Working with the tools received, students have made a Gooey Butter Cake, and Chili - both were delicious! I am requesting additional tools and supplies to help meet the club's needs. These tools and supplies, hotplate, small and jumbo saucepans, a hot plate, a panini press, a blender, and a food chopper, will enable more students to participate in the Cooking Club. The club already has recipes planned for the next several weeks, and these tools will enable members to tackle more ambitious recipes. Our club is also holding a bake sale, and will sponsor a chili cook-off at our school.
