As a Special Education Teacher, Coach, and Athletic Director I try my best, on a daily basis, to meet all of my learners needs! I work at a Title I school, which mainly serves minority students. We have a wide range of learners, from the exceptional children to the academically gifted. Our school was built in 1967 and has a long tradition of hard workers and community pride! We have worked extremely hard the last few years trying to develop a learning environment that promotes movement and rigor, builds confidence and asks for exceptional effort!
MIDDLE SCHOOL! The magical 3 years of a learner’s life! My students have a hard time standing still, funny thing is so does their teacher! Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, standing tables, upholstered chairs, and balance boards. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. We have the data to prove this as well. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
Additional statistics show that 90% of Fortune 500 companies use some sort of standing desk.
The standing desk, stools, and fatigue mats are a great option for my learners!
My students have shown incredible growth on assessments, daily assignments, increased focus and overall performance. We were just celebrated for being in the top 25% of our school district ( 22 middle schools) for math growth on standardized tests! The standing desks and learning stools are a change of pace from a traditional classroom setting. Our learning environment/learning lounge is the envy of many teachers and students in our building. I would love to keep the momentum rolling in our classroom with you support! Please join us in "Standing up for Education"!!
