My Project

Educating developing readers at the middle school level is TOUGH. Novels can be too hard to read and keep their attention independently can seem impossible. Through this donation, intervention teachers at Kenyon-Wanamingo Middle School will be able to encourage our struggling readers to interact and engage with age-appropriate books to continue to build their skills.

These items will allow for teachers to teach novels that are age-appropriate to their students.

Our curriculum provides instruction and this would supplement that instruction with a related novel study to follow after completion of the unit.

Our goal for this project is to develop a "desire" to read. Students who struggle to read do not have the same motivation to read stories as other students their age. Not only would students have the background knowledge needed to understand these stories, they will also be reading stories that their peers may also be reading.

My students are special because they want to work on their reading skills. They do not want to be different from their peers but the reality is, their reading abilities are behind their peers and they are aware of it. My students work very hard to understand classroom material and this donation would support the generalization that would "move the needle" on their reading abilities.
