This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Just shy of half of my students are below grade level in reading and writing. Some of them have not discovered the wonders of reading and have yet to be exposed to what reading has to offer. I want to show them the magic of reading this year using iPads.

I have 18 diverse learners in my classroom.

Each student varies on their academic levels. I have some who are below grade level, a handful on level, and a couple who are above and beyond the others. My school is very diverse and each student has varying needs. Right now, we have no computers to use in our classroom. Luckily, last year my DonorsChoose project was successfully funded and I was able to get 4 iPad minis for my classroom. This year, 4 iPads and no computers just isn't enough. My students love doing hands-on activities and using technology whenever possible. We are big on working collaboratively and using technology, especially in language arts and math. I am working very hard with my students to get them all reading, as first grade is where the foundation for literacy is set. Many students struggle with reading and writing and when they get to use iPads, I see that they are much more excited and eager to learn and are able to keep their attention focused.

My Project

My students will use these 2 iPad minis to enhance their learning and push them to read more often. There are so many educational apps that students can use to build their phonemic awareness, literacy, decoding abilities, and fluency. I can select apps that are appropriate for each student's learning abilities and really differentiate learning to the fullest. The iPads will be used most in reading but I will also incorporate them into other subject areas as well. I will be able to monitor their progress and use the iPads to motivate my students to learn, since many feel that learning to read is difficult.

I want to inspire my students to learn and read by providing them with the resources they need to make it happen.

As a second year teacher, I am limited on my resources and want to go above and beyond to help my students be successful. I believe that iPads will motivate kids to read, practice their fluency, and really put in the extra effort that it takes to get them where they need to be by the end of first grade. In first grade, we set the foundation for literacy for the rest of their lives!
