My Students

Many students at our school come from low-income families. They are hard workers, but face the challenge of not being able to afford adequate supplies to compete against more affluent schools. Such financial challenges often leave our students feeling at a disadvantage.

Feeling disadvantaged due to income, students falsely believe they can't achieve at the same level as other students.

By enabling them to have access to resources other students take for granted, students can feel that they are learning at the same level as other students. As self-confidence is very important to math achievement, this addition to our classroom will increase achievement and engagement.

My Project

Students are capable of demonstrating understanding of more complex problems but are often held back by computational errors. This creates a feeling of continued failure even though they understand the grade level content.

Having access to calculators will allow students to focus on learning 8th grade content and not be frustrated by computation deficiencies.

It is important to promote a positive mathematical mindset and encourage a positive outlook to be successful in math. Students are more engaged in learning when they feel successful and view the subject in a positive light. Having access to a small supply of classroom calculators will allow all students to feel successful and level the learning playing field.
