Containing Kindergarten Chaos

My students need an Attention Getter to help signal transition times, one set of Transition Time Activities, one schedule chart, 2 sets of 12 student work organizers, and 16 at your seat storage sacks so that their books, planners, crayons, and pencils will be in easy reach.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Golas's classroom raised $461

Kindergarten is full of chaos! This statement is so true when you think of trying to get 16 five years olds to do anything together. However, with the right materials I can help my students learn how to be organized, a skill vital to academic success. Where I teach there is a high poverty rate and the education backgrounds and needs of my students are as diverse as the students themselves. Though I have taught for three years, this is my first year teaching Kindergarten and the need for materials to help organize the cheerful chaos that is kindergarten is great.

With the economy as tight as it is the cuts to education have been great in my state. Schools are not just cutting the budget on supplies but teachers as well. My desire to teach Kindergarten moved me to a county that pays less than what I was making in my previous teaching position, and therefore has cut my personal budget on supplies. The parents of my community are not any better off and that leaves the students at a disadvantage. One of my class' biggest challenges is that we are in the smallest room in the school and though with organization, we can make it work, I can not afford the materials to make my classroom a fun and safe place to be.

Currently my students are seated at tables with caddies of supplies for the whole table in the middle. Since we are still learning how to share this creates a challenge for students who need the same materials at the same time to complete their work. With storage sacks for their seats, not only can I provide each student with their own materials, I will have room to place enrichment material for my faster students without cluttering up their already limited table space with books and papers. Many of my students have not been to school before and transitioning from one activity to the next can be very difficult. With The Attention Getter and Transition Time Activities, I can use positive sounds and fun games to help them recognize a transition and make it with little difficulty. Finally, I am in great need of a organizational system for my students work. The binders I am currently using to store their work take up a lot of space and take time to find an individual student's work. With the student organization stands, I will be able to quickly find the papers I need for each student and as they stand on top of each other they take up a limited amount of space.

Living in a low income area will mean many challenges for my students in their academic and personal journeys. A small classroom with no money for organizational materials should not be one of these challenges, especially so early on in their life's. By helping my class, you are not just helping us find a better use of our limited space but will help me model for the students how to be organized, a skill vital to both their educational and personal lives.
