My Students

My classroom is all about creativity. At our school we have a lot of creative students but we're short on materials. Believe it or not, we've gone for years with three colors of construction paper only - Yellow, Purple and Green. Help us get our creative juices flowing with more colors!!

Most of my students come from a poverty situation.

If their parents are employed, the majority hold service positions. They rarely venture out of this little, rural community. The student body is 95% African American and their families have lived here for generations. In fact, most of them are direct descendants of the slaves that worked and lived on the surrounding plantations. Our school is the hub of the community. It is used for many non-school functions and acts as a community center. Before all breakfasts and lunches were free, most of our students qualified for free or reduced price meals. Everyone eats breakfast and lunch here.

My Project

If our school had a vast array of construction paper teachers could supplement core academic lessons with creative art projects. Teaching the whole child is important to us. This would add a tactile learning style to every classroom. Art projects are a great reinforcement for any lesson!

Elementary aged students have so much imagination and creativity!

Unfortunately, most of that is "taught" out of them by the time they leave grade school. If we had a large collection of art supplies, most specifically construction paper, the teachers at our school could keep that creativity alive through many different art projects.
