I am an autistic support teacher in a class of students with autism at a public school in Pennsylvania. Each student in my class has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and has an Individualized Education Program to help guide their instruction through differentiation, modifications, and accommodations in the classroom.
The academic, social and functional needs of my students vary in many ways.
In order for students in my classroom to be successful, there are a number of materials needed to help engage them, assist with their daily individualized routine, and to meet their academic and behavioral needs. We will use a variety of hands-on experiences and opportunities to foster learning. Having an organized and highly structured environment helps the flow within the classroom and leads to academic success and overall growth.
My Project
This project will help benefit my students in many ways. Construction paper and markers will allow my students to express themselves creatively and engage with expressive materials. Laminating paper and velcro will be used in numerous ways in my classroom.
As students with autism, my students depend on a daily schedule.
Laminating the schedule and using velcro will allow for a sturdy schedule that can be used all year long. These materials will also give me the opportunity to create interactive binders to help my students reinforce their skills, as well as learn new skills.
In order for my students to be successful, I must be successful. A desk organizer will help me achieve that. Overall, this project will provide great support to my class.
