My Project
One of my goals as a teacher is to provide my students with the tools they need in order to reach their fullest potential as scholars and humans. As my students are in their adolescent years, they are yearning for connection with their peers, while individually reflecting upon their identities and setting goals for their futures. The materials requested in this project will be instrumental in elevating classroom routines, which include journaling, creating posters, and organizing materials.
The three C’s: consistency, collaboration, and creativity are key ideas I want my students to model in our math classroom.
Knowing how important journaling is to improving mental health, I will have my students spend five minutes each day at the start of class writing down their thoughts before our lesson. Aside from personal reflection time, my philosophy as an educator is that students should be able to collaborate with one another in a learning community. The cardstock and markers will be used to design group posters that feature team names to build camaraderie and mathematical vocabulary to create multiple representations (definitions, pictures, and examples) of concepts. Other materials in this project, such as the storage caddies and labels, will be utilized by students in order to build organizational skills.
My students come into the classroom ready to learn and filled with excitement! I know that they will be extremely grateful to have all of these supplies to use daily. Consistency in journaling will lend to better mental health in students which leads also to better academic performance. Collaboration among peers inspires new ideas, and friendships, and promotes rich discussion of course content. Lastly, creativity is the vehicle that drives students toward their aspirations as they embark on their journeys as mathematicians, scholars, and future changemakers.
