My students in Louisiana take on challenges every day-from helping their families rebuild their homes lost in Hurricane Katrina, to dealing with the inevitable drama of adolescence-but before the year is over, I'm hoping to present them with one more they've never seen before: conquering the "Number Devil."
My fifth graders have worked extremely hard in math class all year, mastering skills such as simplifying fractions and manipulating geometric transformations. For the last few weeks of the year, I want them to push themselves further to understand, test, even debate advanced mathematical topics to which students their age are not usually exposed.
"The Number Devil" is the perfect book to facilitate this process in my classroom. It is about a boy who hates to do mathematical word problems, but ultimately gains confidence in his numerical prowess after being visited in his dreams by the "number devil." The "number devil" teaches him about advanced mathematical concepts, including Fibonacci numbers and the Pythagorean Theorem. It is my hope that exploring these topics through the fun-filled fantasy world of "The Number Devil" will keep my students interested in math in the long term and that being exposed to such advanced topics early on will provide them with an advantage in middle school and high school, where so many students end up getting lost in math.
A classroom set of "The Number Devil" will give my students a sense of ownership over their mission to conquer their own mathematical "devils." It will allow them to not only learn about more advanced mathematical concepts, but will encourage them to view math as something magical and exciting, something that can continue to inspire and empower them throughout their lives, whatever challenges they face.
