Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I'm working as an intervention teacher so these kids have to do both online classes with their regular teacher and then show up for group sessions with me. My 30 sixth graders come from low-income families. They are first generation students who mainly speak Spanish. The majority of them live in multi-family homes sharing rooms with multiple siblings. Most of them have a hard time finding a quiet place to do online classes but they still show up with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. They are really happy with just the basic necessities of life.

My Project

I would love to give my students the opportunity to use iPads in the classroom. For this project, I am requesting an iPad and latin diverse reading books. With an iPad, my students would be getting access to technology they don’t have and at the same time, learning key concepts. They would be able to practice sight words when school returns. For now it will be used to present powerpoints and have access to them everywhere I go. It will also help to meet the needs of individual students and differentiate instruction by having several devices available at all times.

It is important for them to be able to see characters like them being successful and show them there are others like them.

The latin books will be used in conjunction with the ipad. As a teacher, I strive to teach my students about diversity, multiculturalism, and inclusion. These books will help me get my students books that they can identify and relate to. They will see that there are many others like them. The ipad for now will be used to project these stories to the class. It is very important for children to see their lives and the lives of others reflected in the literature they read.
