Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Due to the community in which my students live in, the community's socio-economic status tends to put the children at a disadvantage in several different aspects. Unfortunately, students from my school to perform below average on state tests because of these disadvantages they receive. However, my students are making above average year-over-year academic improvement. As many of my students are English Language Learners, they are reading below the seventh-grade benchmark level. Their inability to speak English and my inability to speak another language, I struggle to be the most effective teacher possible for my students.
My Project
As a non-billingual teacher who is servicing several non-English speaking children, there are certainly moments where I struggle to communicate with my students. The unfortunate language barrier between teacher and students makes it virtually impossible for me to consistently communicate with and teach the children.
My students would benefit from exposure to rich language experiences which they would receive through the use of iPads and various books.
By introducing the iPad to the classroom, the students will have access to quality literature, help build fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills, while providing them with accurate models of the English language. They would also be able to use applications that would make the necessary bi-lingual communication accessible.
