The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go," are the wise words of Dr. Seuss.
I want my students to read more, know more, and go amazing places but first they have to comprehend their texts, so that they can and will do all of these things!
My students attend a Title One Public School in New York.
Comprehension of more complex texts, both non-ficiton and fiction is a a skill that they are still actively and eagerly working to achieve. They love books but struggle with drawing conclusions and making inferences. They often miss "what is between the lines...". I want them to have those "A-HA" moments and to figure our the layers within the stories. In addition, I want them to be capable of comprehending non-fiction materials, so that the dazzling array of texts they come across in middle school, high school and beyond, are not puzzling to them. I want them to possess the comprehension skills necssary for life-long success.
My Project
To empower my students to improve their comprehension I am requesting a variety of non-fiction and fiction books and materials to make them excited about building their reading skills. I have requested science related books that cover space and weather systems to excite my scientifically inclined students. I have asked for centers that build reading skills using the history of the American Revolution, explorers, and our Presidents for my social studies lovers. The fluency scripts I'm asking for are to involve my children who love performing and to make the material more accessible to my kinesthetic and visual learners. Finally, I have asked for non-fiction folders and cards that contain the information needed for students to better understand and process a variety of non-fiction texts. These wonderfully diverse topics should provide and area of interest and engagement for all the different learners in my class.
Reading sometimes starts with A Cat in a Hat but even Dr. Seuss knew it was more than that!
If you support my request for non-fiction comprehension centers and curriculum scripts then you'll help me give my students the greatest gift we can give them - a love and understanding of books.
