This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are struggling readers who love reading and are making gains to becoming fluent readers.
They are mostly 5th grade English Language Learners from other countries.
They come to school every day ready to learn how to read and write. They are on different levels of the reading spectrum. Some are working on phonics skills, while most are learning new vocabulary to increase their fluency and comprehension.
My Project
The students will use high interest, varying levels of books during small group time to further develop their reading comprehension. They will use the tablet to document various reading skills, such as writing about character traits, sequence of events, author's purpose, problem/solution, and theme. They will be able to print out their writing to keep as a resource for each book. They will also use the tablet to create their own books for our Author's Chair. We will also use the tablet to video the students reading their books for the Author's Chair.
These resources will not only help improve my students' reading comprehension, but will motivate them to keep reading and writing.
We have two mantras this year. The first is, "When I read, I will write". The second is, "I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday".
