"It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations—something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own." —Katherine Patterson
In order to engage my students in reading, they need books that reflect who they are.
Thanks to generous donors like you, I was able to start a library of books in Spanish with characters that my students can relate to. However, since the last project was funded, our class sizes have gone from an average of 27 students to an average of 38! Since each student needs to have their own copy to read in class, we need more books!
In order to encourage a love of reading, I have implemented a class book-in-common. Each day, we spend time reading together, discussing the novel, and most importantly, making connections with the characters and each other. I want my students to fall in love with reading and emphasize their pride in who they are. By providing Spanish-language books to my students, they will be able to improve their reading proficiency, build academic vocabulary, and learn about other cultures. I plan on encouraging students to develop as biliterate learners by allowing them to choose a book to read and discuss important themes with peers.
In the words of Garrison Keillor, "a book is a gift you can open again and again."
