My Project
Most of my alternative students have never had the opportunity to see an insect go through the stages of its life cycle. Allowing the students to grow the plants that butterflies and moths use in the ecosystem could help them make a connection of plants and animals. Being able to bring this experience to them could be life changing.
Many of my students lack the experience and knowledge of how habitats and ecosystems function.
Some have never grown anything on their own and have most certainly never experienced watching an insect life cycle. We discuss it in Class and complete the requirements of the curriculum, but this opportunity would bring these concepts into focus and would help my students see first hand how important and amazing the world around them functions everyday.
Being able to watch the metamorphosis of the insects and relate that to the growth and success of plants would allow my students to see the connection between the biodiversity in an ecosystem. knowing that milkweed is needed for butterflies to lay eggs and that moths eat on gardening plants will help my students see the connections in an ecosystem. They will gain an understanding of how one plant or animals effects another.
