My Project
The Connections Beyond project is designed to support students with special needs in developing and honing their social skills for better engagement with their peers. The program employs a multifaceted approach, combining structured group activities, one-on-one coaching sessions, and immersive experiential learning opportunities. Through weekly group sessions, students are introduced to fundamental social concepts such as active listening, empathy, and effective communication using board games, basketballs and trains to facilitate topics of conversation and work on winning and losing. These sessions provide a safe and supportive environment for students to practice their social skills with guidance from trained facilitators.
In addition to group sessions, the Connections Beyond project offers individualized coaching sessions tailored to each student's specific needs and challenges.
During these sessions, students receive personalized feedback and strategies for improving their social interactions. Through targeted interventions and ongoing support, students develop greater confidence and competence in navigating social situations. Moreover, the project incorporates real-world experiences, such as community outings to the park where they will play with bubbles, corn hole, soccer, basketball and collaborative projects, to reinforce social skills in authentic settings and promote generalization of learned skills beyond the classroom.
The overarching goal of the Connections Beyond project is to empower students with special needs to build meaningful connections with their peers and thrive in social environments. By providing a structured framework, individualized support, and opportunities for real-world application through play and sensory, the project equips students with the tools they need to navigate social interactions successfully. Ultimately, the project aims to foster a sense of belonging and inclusion for all students, laying the foundation for lifelong social and emotional well-being.
