I teach at a Title 1 school in Atlanta, Georgia where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My Kindergarten students enjoy having the opportunity to grow and develop through learning centers. Kindergarten is a time for my students to expand their love of learning, build knowledge, develop their ability to get along with others, and explore ways of reaching out to the world. When you enter the doors of my kindergarten classroom, you would immediately see my students playing and working with materials such as magnifying glasses and magnets in the science center, reading and math learning game boards, etc. and through technology using reading listening stations and more. It may look as if students are just having fun, but they are actually learning skills and standards while developing cognitive development which is achieved through child-initiated exploration and discovery. I do not expect my healthy students, with all of their enthusiasm and energy to just sit at their desks -frozen. One thing I can be sure of is that Kindergarten lays the foundation for learning. I don’t know if the perfect classroom exists, but I definitely strive for the best because my children certainly deserve!
Technology has a prominent place in schools and in kindergarten classrooms. While technology doesn't take the place of vital, developmental play and hands-on learning, it adds to them, reinforcing traditional methods of teaching. Technology in my kindergarten class is designed to encourage young children and allows for creativity and connection to the curriculum. Kindergarten students have short attention spans, but their interest is sparkled by technology. My students' interests are sparkled through learning to practice letter, reading skills, number sense through interactive computer games as well as more traditional applications. My students are at various levels of understanding and this iPad will allow my students to work at their own pace.
