My Students

My students attend the oldest elementary school in the nation, but our school often struggles to provide necessary supplies and classroom materials due to yearly budget cuts. My 4th graders come to my classroom with a diverse range of needs, challenges and experiences, and problems can arise from a lack of understanding about each other's cultures and lives.

My students are from African American and white American families, as well as recent immigrants from Vietnam, Cape Verde, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, and they are learning how to become serious students in the United States.

Some of my students are accustomed to 50 person classes where they only have access to materials in one way, and these superscholars need help with accessing information via different modalities.

My Project

Listenwise, The Color of My Words, and NearPod SEL will be extremely helpful to our students while at home, in the school setting, or in their personal communities. First, Listenwise is a digital program that makes (ELA, Social Studies, Science) it easy to bring current events, authentic voices, and engaging non-fiction stories to the classroom, so that students feel connected to the outside world. Since we are in an era of a pandemic, and activities have been limited (especially to our under serviced population of students) it is especially important that we give students access to current events, engaging stories, and other voices.

Students absolutely love reading, and learning from The Color of My Words!

I have read this story to my class for the last 8 years, and each year students came to class eager to hear more. This story will help students to make connections to family, community, and peers. They recognize ongoing themes, and have a chance to dive into poetry while reflecting on their own dreams.

Our classroom is composed of diverse learners who are eager to learn from each other. Many of our students are dealing with different kinds of trauma. For this reason, it is the responsibility of adults to care for scholars' social emotional needs. Acknowledging trauma and teaching scholars how to cope is imperative. Nearpod (social emotional learning) will serve as a great resource for building safe classroom communities while teaching students about empathy, respect, compassion, patience, and kindness. We will start this during the beginning of our school year.
