Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students and their families face many challenges and do not have the same experiences as other more affluent families. Most of my students are English Language Learners that need exposure to experiences that will encourage language development. Many are faced with poverty and the lack of background knowledge. My class consists of all types of learners, including children with special needs. At this young age, my students are excited about learning and experiencing new things. We are a Title I School that promotes success for all students.
My Project
This project will open a door for my early learners to connect to the real, natural world. Our young students today are spending too much time on screens and not enough time outside. Help me bring nature into their everyday experience.
With the current crisis of nature deficit disorder among today's children, my goal is to create natural spaces that promote positive/sensory learning experiences using natural, real items.
These materials are essential for my students, many do not have the opportunity to explore in their own backyard (do not have one), neighborhood parks (unsafe) and/or are unable to take day trips with their families due to various circumstances.
An outdoor sensory table will create a calm space that will allow my students to learn about life cycles while exploring nature. Bringing the natural world to them will engage their curiosity to use their senses and expand their science knowledge. This space will also be a place where students can practice their self-regulation skills preparing them for future success.
Through this exploration, students will connect with nature while building their background knowledge creating a stewardship and love for our earth. All of these experiences will help my students build a connection with nature while building their self-confidence exploring with real life items instead of plastic and/or worksheets.
