Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have some of the best students even though they face many obstacles. Our campus is a Title I bilingual campus with over 80% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged. They deserve every opportunity to succeed and to be engaged in every part of their learning.
Student engagement is one of the many keys to us reaching our students and helping them fit into the ever-changing world they live in.
Our classrooms of today cannot continue to look like our classrooms of the past if we want our students to be problem solvers and use all the skills they need to be successful in the world they live in. Our spaces should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. We need to provide our students with choices so that they can be successful in their educational endeavors.
My Project
We have a few circuit kits in our Makerspace, but we need more. Our students love to experiment with the circuit kits and these are great for our STEM units. Our students read and learn about how circuits work and what they need to work, but just reading about them doesn't always mean you understand them. Having these kits on hand for students to play and practice with help them to understand how they work and what happens when one wrong connection is where it should be.
Students love working with simple circuits and learning about conductors and insulators of electricity.
They love to make the fan work, make the doorbell buzzer work, or make a light come on. Right now we only have three circuit sets for the entire campus and they are used all the time. We would love to add to our collection so that all grades can have hands on materials as they experiment and learn about electricity.
