This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our high school has 3000+ students from diverse backgrounds with more than 35 languages spoken within our school population. Many students face daily barriers (economic, social, emotional, physical, educational) which impede their attendance, behavior, engagement in learning and their dreams for the future. Many of our students experience chronic absenteeism, attending less than 85% of the school days and have a variety of behavior issues. Our co-taught classes include general education students as well as special education students who have a variety of disabilities, which impact their education on a daily basis.

I currently co-teach in 3 different Math classes with 2 different teachers and we are in need of calculators to support the students progress and success in class.

Unfortunately, many of our students lack the needed items to support them within the classroom. Our high school students are enrolled in classes that are preparing them for their lives after graduation without the basic technology to do so.

My Project

All of the students who enter our classroom take math classes each year to fulfill their graduation requirements. Many students are unable to supply their own personal calculators, therefore they have limited exposure to the appropriate uses and advantages of using a calculator within their math classroom and become disengaged in their daily learning. Some bring basic function calculators but are unable to complete specific calculations for class with those calculators, putting them at a disadvantage. Students easily become disengaged in the lesson and miss essential instruction and practice. Providing our classes with calculators will remove a personal barrier for many students allowing them to become re-engaged during math class.

Calculators will support the students in our co-taught classes and help them attain academic achievement as well as provide opportunities for personalized instruction targeting specific necessary skills.

The calculators will increase their ability to complete assignments, progress at their own personal pace and re-engage them in the learning process. This needed technology will allow students to increase their confidence and understanding of calculator skills through small group instruction, one to one personalized lessons, and independent practice.
