Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a public high school in Harlem, where almost all of our students live at or below the poverty line. Many of my students are immigrants, or have parents that are immigrants, with English not being their native tongue.
My students are curious about the world around them, constantly asking questions and creating their own learning experiences.
They are bright, creative, and eager to learn, and they deserve every opportunity to become life long learners. Helping my students listen, interact, and read English, grade level texts will allow equity for my students, who are often categorized as others.
My Project
Making my classroom a safe space to explore literature and themselves is the goal in my 9th grade classroom. Making my classroom safe, physically, by the organization of our things is also a goal. I want my students to feel safe in all aspects of their high school journey while in my classroom.
Being able to connect to literature written by someone who looks like my students is paramount.
By gaining enough copies of The House on Mango Street, written by a Mexican-American woman, my students will be able to see themselves and others in our book clubs. I am requesting both English and Spanish copies for my emerging readers to be able to access the text. I am also requesting the organization tools to keep them accountable for materials and safe without things all over the classroom.
